Fancy Film Expands with Nucoda HD

February 9, 2011  (Los Angeles, CA) Digital Vision, leading manufacturers of image enhancement and mastering systems for film and television post production, has announced that Fancy Film Post Production, the Silver Lake, California based post boutique and consultancy, has purchased a Nucoda HD system to complement its existing services.  Fancy Film offers start-to-finish post services that include creative editing, consulting and finishing for television and features.  In addition to supporting the post workflow already in place, the Nucoda HD will anchor one of the most innovative and efficient workflows that Fancy Film is developing.

Fancy Film was launched in 2001 led by Bill Macomber, who had built a strong following as an up and coming documentary film editor.  In the decade since, the post house’s credits have grown to include independent features, corporate communication, music videos and a wide scope of television projects.

“We looked closely at the entire range of products on the market,” said Bill.  “At the end of the process, beyond its impressive grading capabilities, there were a number of factors that sealed our decision for Nucoda:  its real time processing and Open EXR architecture were top of the list.  It is absolutely the fastest system we tested and it has opened the door to powerful collaboration.  Since we are always in search of better-cheaper-faster without compromising quality, the strengths of the Nucoda were really important in our decision.  After reviewing the business case, it was clear that the Nucoda’s toolset and flexibility, leads directly to our ROI.”

Fancy Film is developing a modified workflow using the Nucoda HD. Bill continued, “We are pointing our workflow decidedly towards the future, moving files into the Nucoda workflow as early as possible.  The system is so flexible and powerful that it can support editorial, visual effects, and rendering.  Once a project has finished creatively, there will be no need to move it out of the Nucoda.”  Another important motivation for the choice of Nucoda was Fancy Film’s commitment to working with a supportive collaborator; and Digital Vision has a well-established reputation for such long term, developmental relationships with their clients.

Fancy Film is currently at work on a number of series, including “Underwater Universe,” set to air on the History Channel.  Colorist Mike Smollin commented, “On this show, I work with very demanding underwater footage, which has differences in lighting, moving layers and challenges in matching.  The Nucoda helps me get where I need to be with flexibility and speed.”
